Furthermore information about the destinations
Franschhoek
Franschhoek is situated in one of the world’s most beautiful wine valleys. More than 300 years ago the French Huguenots settled in Franschhoek region, bringing with them their winemaking and food knowledge, which has today resulted in South Africa’s gastronomic capital. It was only when the French Huguenots arrived in South Africa, that the wine culture took off and with their knowledge they laid the foundation for today’s South African wine industry.
Stellenbosch is known as South Africa’s wine capital and the town of Stellenbosch (with its wine regions) was the first to establish a wine route in 1971. This is were many of the country’s most popular wineries are located and they are well worth visiting. We have selected some favourites, each quite individual, with different character, some for the fabulous farms, others for the exceptional qualty of their wine.
Hermanus
The Hermanus wine region has been expanding and now has its very own attractive wine route. Visit the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of the most southern wine districts in Africa, where several of the country’s top winemakers are located and developing their wines.
Many of South Africa’s highly respectedy wineries are located around the village of Botriver (20 minutes drive from Hermanus) and are well worth visiting. If you are lucky, you can get a sip of wine straight from the barrel.
Cape Town
Close to one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town, you will find the green and lush Constantia Winelands. An area with some of the oldest and most magnificent vineyards in the country. The fertile slopes and the mild Mediterranean climate create perfect conditions for growing quality wine. Constantia is home to several famous wineries, including Klein Constantia, which is described as one of the world’s most beautiful wineries. It also produces one of the world’s most famous dessert wines, Vin de Constance, appreciated by leaders and aristocracy throughout 18th-century Europe, including Napoleon’s favorite wine.
You can travel to South Africa all year round, but we recommend going September to May
Healthcare is good in South Africa. Even so we suggest obtaining a sound travel insurance before departure
As a EU and UK citizen, you will receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in South Africa
To ponder before travelling:
The so-called “peak season” in December / January is very popular indeed and requires booking of accommodation, safaris, activities and restaurants well in advance.
