Proposed itinerary Gourmet Treat
12-DAYS GOURMET TREAT IN WESTERN CAPE
A return trip with a start in the gastronomic town, Franschhoek followed by a visit to the wine district around the wine capital, Stellenbosch. A visit to vineyards in Botriver and then on to the scenic coastal town of Hermanus and end the trip in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town.
Furthermore information about the destinations
Franschhoek
Franschhoek is situated in one of the world’s most beautiful wine valleys. More than 300 years ago the French Huguenots settled in the Franschhoek region and brought with them their winemaking and food knowledge, which today has resulted in Franschhoek being seen as South Africa’s gastronomic capital. It was only when the French Huguenots arrived in South Africa, that the wine culture took off and with their knowledge they laid the foundation for today’s South African wine industry.
Stellenbosch is known as South Africa’s wine capital and the town of Stellenbosch (with its wine regions) was the first to establish a “wine route” in 1971. This is where many of the country’s most popular wineries are located and they are well worth visiting.
Hermanus
The Hermanus wine region has grown and now have its own attractive wine route. Visit the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of the most southern wine districts in Africa, where several of the country’s top winemakers are specialising in the production of some of the country’s best Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
Many of South Africa’s best wineries are located in Botriver (20 minutes drive from Hermanus) and are well worth visiting. If you are lucky, you can get a sip of wine straight from the barrel.
Visit the often unexplored and idyllic town of Stanford (10 minutes drive from Hermanus) which was founded in 1785 and named one of Africa’s best-preserved cities. Enjoy a delicious organic lunch on one of the beautiful surrounding farms. More and more winemakers have settled in this young developing area and you will be able to taste some of their exciting wines.
Cape Town
On the outskirts of one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town, you will find the green and lush Constantia Winelands. An area which proudly hosts some of the oldest and magnificent wineries in the country. Needless to say, there are a number of remarkable restaurants in and around Cape Town to cater for every need.
You can travel to South Africa all year round, but we recommend going September to May
Healthcare is good in South Africa. Even so we suggest obtaining a sound travel insurance before departure
As a EU and UK citizen, you will receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in South Africa
To ponder before travelling:
The so-called “peak season” in December / January is very popular indeed and requires booking of accommodation, safaris, activities and restaurants well in advance.
